What is Japanese catnip, matatabi, silvervine? Sweet scented Japanese catnip (scientific name, actinidia polygama) is related to the kiwi fruit. It gives euphoric response to cats, like nepeta cataria (catnip). Japanese catnip / matatabi / slivervine is non-toxic, mainly found in Japan and China. It is also used in traditional Chinese medicines. Silvervine leaves and branches are known to be particularly potent in making cats happy!

Silver Vine has long been known to elicit euphoric responses in cats. It more popular than catnip in Asia, particularly in Japan and China. The reaction to Silver Vine is similar to the catnip response, but may be more intense. Typical behaviors include rolling, chin and cheek rubbing, drooling, and licking. The effects may last for 5 to 30 minutes, and unlike catnip cats often return for more Matatabi repeatedly after the effects begin to wear off.
